Vern is it!  “Engineers” was included in the company name in the event another joins the firm.

Vern is an energy engineer and principal of Smith Energy Engineers, LLC.  He specializes in energy instrumentation, monitoring, energy modeling, commissioning, and HVAC fault detection technologies.  He has over 25 years of experience in energy engineering, including 18 years with Architectural Energy Corporation (AEC).

While at AEC, Vern’s assignments were focused on building science and food service energy research.  His projects covered end-use energy metering of individual appliances to building systems to whole buildings, as well as energy modeling of building components and whole buildings.  He developed AEC’s commissioning process for food service systems in new and existing buildings. 

From 2008 to 2010, he was Director of Field Operations for the Enforma Building Diagostics Team, which was chartered to develop web-based HVAC diagnostic systems using building automation system data.

He worked with the Food Service Technology Center (FSTC) as the energy modeler for the The Energy Efficient McDonald’s (TEEM) project.  Vern provided energy modeling services for the first LEED Gold certified Yum! Brands quick service restaurant.  Since 2011, he has modeled McDonald’s LEED Volume Program stores and stores with unique footprints.   Vern was a team member in Rocky Mountain Institute’s Net Zero Energy McDonald’s project and provided energy modeling for its predecessor, Duke University’s Net Zero Energy McDonald’s study.
